Road America Winners Petersen Motorsports/ White Lightning Racing Ready to Add to Victory Total

MONTEREY, Calif., September 4, 2003 Fresh off their first American Le Mans Series (ALMS) GT class victory at Road America, Petersen Motorsports/ White Lightning Racing is ready to add a second ALMS trophy at this weekend's Monterey Sports Car Championships at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. As an off-road team in the 1980s and 90s, Petersen/ White Lightning won over 50 races and four championships. Since it started competing in sports car racing, the Las Vegas-based team has racked-up wins in the SCCA World Challenge, the Trans-Am Series and, in cooperation with ALMS rival Alex Job Racing, won the 2003 GT class of the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. This weekend's two hour and 45 minute endurance race at the 2.238 mile, natural terrain road course bodes well for the Michael Petersen-owned team. Petersen/White Lightning driver Johnny Mowlem, of Warfield, England, took his first career ALMS GT class victory at Mazda Raceway in 1999. Michael Petersen and team manager Dale White teamed as drivers to achieve their highest finishing position behind the wheel, a fourth, here that same year. Craig Stanton, a native Californian living in Long Beach, has also had extensive success at the 11-turn facility over his career never finishing outside the top-ten in class.“We're looking forward to carrying the momentum from Road America to Laguna Seca,” commented Petersen. “We have that monkey off our back and we're ready to take it to the Alex Job guys the rest of the season. We worked hard to get the first victory. We had come so close so many times. Now we want to keep the momentum going.”Stanton, who underwent an appendectomy on Saturday, Sept. 1, is focused on competing in Sunday's event. “Being from California, I have always enjoyed the track and racing in Monterey. I love a place I can race and surf on the same weekend.”The Monterey Sports Car Championships will broadcast live on NBC at 4 pm (EDT) Sunday, September 7. Qualifying will be held on Saturday.Petersen Motorsports/ White Lightning Racing began operation in the late 1980s competing in off-road endurance events. The duo of Petersen and White joined to win over 50 off-road truck victories including three-consecutive overall wins at the Baja 1000 and Baja 500 and four SCORE, SNORE and SODA championships. Since introducing the team to sports car racing, the effort has scored victories in the Trans-Am Series, Speed Challenge Series and endurance sports car wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Watkins Glen and at the Rolex 24 of Daytona.
